For all the anxiety they've had over the past month and doing whatever preparation they can, once the day actually comes, it's almost kind of familiar.

In a terrifying, oh god the world is ending again kind of way.

The only exception is this time, there are no powered heroes to step in to save the day. Cap and Tony can still help, but they're only two people against everyone's deepest fears and nightmares. Two guys and Thor's giant hammer, anyway.

With no powers and a couple month's worth of self-defense classes, Billy feels completely helpless as he and Teddy make their way to the New Atlantis safe zone. Being under a shield and doing nothing while people are in trouble is not their style, but without powers he can't do much to help anyone, let alone keep Teddy safe.

It's his nightmare that will eventually be coming to life today, and there's no way he'll let anything happen to Teddy. Not today, not ever. Not if he can help it, and if that means hiding under a shield for they entire day while everyone else goes off to be heroes, then so be it.

The New Atlantis shield is kind of pretty - much prettier in person than it ever looked on television - and he can hear it coming down and going back up to let people in before they even approach it. Once they're in, once the shield goes back down, a quiet settles around them and Billy relaxes a little.

This isn't exactly Billy's idea of where he'd wanted his afternoon to go, but after waking from a nightmare this morning, he's given in to Teddy's requests. Maybe spaced out, it wouldn't have been worrying -- he has nightmares, it comes with the territory. But having such specific nightmares where the main focus is his terror is a completely different animal. With all the steps the Council has been taking lately to talk to everyone, it makes sense to search them out.

And if anyone's going to make him feel any better about this, other than Teddy, it's Steve Rogers. It's not like Cap can go in his brain and punch the Skrulls back to their home planet, but simply telling him about it might help.

Billy gives Teddy one last look, and squeezes his boyfriend's hand. He loosens his grip, but after a moment of hesitation tightens it again. Teddy's often been his backbone when he needs it, and right now, Billy needs him.

He steps a little way into the Council office, poking his head in to see if anyone's actually there. Thankfully Cap is alone, and Billy only feels a slight bit of relief before he takes a deep breath. "Um...hi, Steve."

He doesn't wake with a start this time, but that doesn't mean the nightmare's lingering effects aren't still there. It had all been so slow this time, Billy unable to move or even speak in the nightmare, and once again, totally unable to save Teddy.

As messed up as the nightmares are, they aren't surprising. What does disturb Billy is the frequency and intensity -- and since blurting it out to Teddy when he'd lost his memories, he knows they worry him, too.

Billy makes a disgruntled noise when he lifts his head off the couch, his math book creased into his cheek. He looks around long enough to see Teddy, then drops his head back down. Onto the hard cover of the text book.

"Ow."

Lots of horrible things happen to super heroes. It's a fact of the hero life, Billy's knows, from all the comics he's read and hearing about the crazy things the Avengers and X-Men get up to. However you go into it, it's something you have to think about, and he'd been giving it a lot more thought ever since meeting Nathan and ending up on the island, missing two years of his own life.

It figures that some crappy stuff must have happened to him since, but that still doesn't make the nightmares any less terrifying, or confusing. Why should he get nightmares if he didn't even live through those events? They hardly ever make sense to Billy, and the only things he ever recognizes are a big green guy he's come to realize is Teddy, himself, and Skrulls.

Always Skrulls. Sometimes they're normal Skrulls, but sometimes, like tonight, it's the Super Skrull, and he's so hellbent on killing them -- on killing Teddy, that the fear chokes Billy up and has him gasping when he wakes.

It's about the fifth night of the same nightmare since he woke up with amnesia, and the adrenaline and fear pumping through his body tonight is enough that he doesn't even think before he gets out of bed. He pads down the staircase, in boxers alone, and walks over to the couch Teddy has been sleeping on since that first night.

Billy almost lets Teddy be; he looks peaceful and innocent, like none of the stress of being Billy's caretaker can touch him at night. And it sucks that he's about to do this, but he's still kind of shivering and he can't shake the image of Teddy hurt and bleeding, so he reaches out and gives his bare shoulder a firm shake.

"Teddy," he says, loud enough to rouse him, but not so much to startle him awake. "Teddy, please wake up."

Whenever he has the nightmares, he's vaguely aware that it's not real, but that doesn't strip away the fact that they are still his own memories, ones he's tried his best to set aside. He misses his life in the past, but not the way he remembers them in his dreams.

Not when he's tied up and the only thing he can see is the red of Teddy's blood, not when a Super Skrull has Teddy's throat between his rocky hand and another hand of flame coming in to finish the job--

Billy wakes, choking on Teddy's name and grasping the sheets between sweaty fingers. He tries to keep quiet, but he can't help turning and placing a light hand over Teddy's chest, to make sure he's still there and still breathing.
